About Facelift Surgery

Types of Facelifts
Regardless of your aesthetic concerns, there are numerous facelifts to consider. Some facelifts treat the upper area of the face, and others focus on the lower two-thirds. Moreover, some techniques are a bit more invasive than others. Some of the more known facelift techniques include:
- Full Facelift
A common surgery for older adults, the full or "traditional" facelift. This facelift incorporates an incision near the hairline, extending down to the temple region, and stopping near the base of the ears. The deeper layer of facial muscles will be delicately stretched and securely tightened to create a lifted appearance, which diminishes excessive wrinkles and sagging. A full facelift is for patients who show signs of aggressive aging and may need a combination of treatments for optimal outcomes, such as an eyelid lift to address the eyes or neck reduction for the lower region.
Incorporating a similar method to the mini facelift, the cheek lift (known as a mid-facelift) addresses the droopy features around the cheekbones as well as the upper jaw. The mid facelift works great for men and women who desire improvement in the middle to lower region of the face, which also includes the jowls.
- Lower Facelift
A lower facelift elevates the skin on the neck, chin, and jowls. Methods of a nonsurgical nature, such as Kybella chin fat reduction injections or laser skin tightening, may be applied before surgical intervention for a younger-looking neck.
- Mini Facelift
When undergoing a mini facelift, tiny incisions will be placed near the ears to elevate the skin, which helps the mouth and jawline. This technique creates nice and subtle enhancements, which look beautiful and natural.
"This review may be a little early as I just got my cast off my nose today...but I am over the moon. I don't know how Dr. Keyes does it, and I'll admit I was skeptical while the cast was on as the cast and tape can distort things. I was actually a nervous wreck. But when that cast came off today, it reduced me to happy tears. He did everything I wanted and more. My nose is now straight, and it looks amazing. Even swollen I love it! I can breathe through my left nostril for the first time and it feels so good. I seriously feel like a new person. I'm so excited to see how it progresses over the next year. Dr. Keyes was the only consultation I had, and for a second it crossed my mind, did I jump the gun on this? Do I need a second opinion? Something in my gut trusted him. And I'm so glad my gut was right. His reviews and his before and after photos on his website speak for themselves. I am so thankful to Dr. Keyes and Kimberly. They're so easy to reach and they care about you just as much before the surgery as they do after. They are wonderful. Couldn't recommend them more. I am so happy. Thank you Dr. Keyes and Kimberly. From the bottom of my heart!"- S.B. / Yelp / Nov 05, 2019
"So happy with rhinoplasty results - two weeks post op! - I'm only two weeks post op from my nose surgery so technically I should wait to write this review until the final result, but I can't wait. I am so happy with my results. Dr. Keyes is an expert rhinoplasty surgeon, and he did a remarkable job on me. I was classified as "a hard nose" because I already had a nice nose, but I was always self conscious because it was slightly crooked and pinched in the center which also gave me breathing issues. He knew exactly what I needed from the moment he saw my nose, and he delivered. My nose is so natural and beautiful now, I can't believe it's only going to get better. Hard to imagine! Not to mention my breathing is amazing. Feels like I have an invisible breathe right strip on. It's an incredible feeling.Kimberly, his partner is also lovely. Like all the other reviewers say, she is there every step of the way answering questions and concerns. Both of them couldn't be easier to reach. Kimberly is warm and friendly and makes you feel totally comfortable. All in all I feel lucky to have found them, and I am so thankful. Will report back with an update a couple months from now. Thank you Dr. Keyes and Kimberly!"- P. / RealSelf / Nov 11, 2019
"Dr. Keyes and Kimberley, his surgical assistant, are the best in the business. These days it is tough to find a surgeon especially because you can find a lot of flashy pictures on social media that might make you interested in visiting a surgeon, but when it comes down to it it's all about skill. Dr. Keyes has been president of the rhinoplasty society and speaks around the world on surgical techniques. Kimberley is SO kind and caring, you will certainly be in great hands with these two. When it comes down to picking a surgeon, it is key to find a surgeon that has the credentials, bedside manner, and experience and that is Dr. Keyes and Kimberley! I'm only 4 months post-op and I can't wait until my final results. This is the place to go for your next procedure, 100%. Wish I could give more than 5 stars!"- J.S. / Yelp / Oct 29, 2019
"Kimberely and Dr. Keyes are the best! - Prior to Dr. Keyes I had seen three different ENT’s; two scoped my nose, one wanted a CT scan and I had a couple of surgeries that were of no help.My primary care physician suggested I go see Dr. Keyes, because he was able to help one of her other patients.I was NOT thrilled on the idea to go see a "plastic surgeon".I called and talked to Kimberley, Dr. Keyes Director of Patient Services. She is absolutely AMAZING! She answered all of my many questions and I called more than once!I met with Dr. Keyes and told him about the issues with my nasal passages. He listened, asked a few questions and then examined my nose. After a little prodding, he said there were three items wrong with my nose. He described the details of the nose functions and then explained what needed to be done to mine.I was impressed. It made sense and I went through with the surgery.I wish I would have gone to him FIRST!THANK YOU Dr. Keys and Kimberley! You two are the best!"- N. / RealSelf / Oct 14, 2019
"3 months post-op and loving so far! - Dr. Keyes and Kimberley are literally the BEST of the best. I've been waiting to write my formal review (and will be doing so when I have more time to rave about them) but honestly I've been getting a ton of compliments and couldn't wait! They are the dream team! More formal review to come :)"- R. / RealSelf / Oct 13, 2019
If you are experiencing age lines and wrinkles, jowls, or skin laxity within the skin of your lower to mid-face, you may be a good candidate for a facelift. Dr. Keyes will perform a facial exam and consultation to determine your candidacy for this procedure and begin to plan your surgery. Facelift techniques are different for patients who are in their thirties who have loose skin versus patients who are over sixty with aged, elastin-depleted skin. Skin laxity is one of the key components in the decision-making process. No matter what your age, you should be physically healthy, be a nonsmoker, and also have expectations that are realistic of what a facelift can do for the skin.
Prior to the facelift procedure, you will receive a list of instructions to follow in order to enhance your recovery. This may include: having someone to stay with you during the initial 24 hours or more after the procedure and buying gauze pads, ice chips, and prescription medications beforehand. The facelift procedure may be performed under twilight sedation or general anesthesia, depending upon Dr. Keyes and your preference. Some patients may opt for a general or a local anesthetic; however, most of our facelift patients will use twilight sedation. The incisions will be made strategically behind the hairline and may extend around your head, depending upon the extent of the lift required. During the procedure, Dr. Keyes will lift excess tissue, muscle, and/or skin. He will reposition and suture it back into an elevated place. During surgery, he can carefully conceal incisions in your hairline and behind your ears.
The incision may be made in front of the ear, inside the ear, and then extends behind the ear by the earlobe. The skin, fat, and muscle are separated, lifted and then re-draped to a more youthful-appearing position. Often times, the fat and muscle are sutured in place to prevent premature descent. Extra care will be taken in suturing the incision to minimize the scar after the initial healing period. After surgery, you will rest comfortably and may be transferred to an aftercare facility for recovery care before returning home. If you do not live locally and are interested in traveling to southern California or Los Angeles with Dr. Keyes, facelift surgery usually necessitates a minimum one-week stay.
What to Expect
Dr. Keyes will meet with you in the days following the procedure to help ensure a smooth recovery. The results may change, depending upon lifestyle habits such as smoking which may adversely impact the results of the procedure over time. People are most often content with the results from the facelift for ten to fifteen or more years time.
In a follow-up appointment at our office, your stitches will be removed in 7 – 10 days. Most patients return to work after two weeks. For patients interested in traveling to southern California or Los Angeles, facelift surgery necessitates usually a minimum one-week stay. Minimal discomfort occurs after the facelift however bruising and swelling usually can take around two weeks to resolve.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a facelift cost?
The cost of your facelift will depend on the technique and other factors. In your consultation, Dr. Keyes will create your unique treatment plan to match your needs and goals. When the consultation complete, he can go over estimates of fees. To avoid unnatural-looking results, it's better to concentrate on finding a skilled surgeon, like Dr. Keyes, instead of the lowest price. Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S. can give you information on low-interest financing as well.
Should I get a surgical or nonsurgical facelift? Which technique is best for me?
The best technique for you will vary based on your concerns, goals, level of skin laxity, what areas are being addressed, and other factors. To produce your best results, Dr. Keyes will explain the different techniques in your consultation. He can then help you choose the technique.
Although there are several great noninvasive skin tightening treatments, these can only give you small improvements. For moderate-to-severe skin sagging, facelift surgery is the optimal choice to improve your appearance. In your consultation, Dr. Keyes will discuss your options, including any nonsurgical procedures to help you meet your goals.
What about wrinkle fillers and relaxers over facelift surgery?
Wrinkle fillers (Juvéderm®) and relaxers (BOTOX®) have become a popular noninvasive way to improve fine lines and wrinkles. Also known as a liquid facelift, nonsurgical wrinkle treatments with injectables usually help with early signs of aging. Unfortunately, the results will only last more than 1 – 2 years. A facelift will produce more significant improvements than injectables with longer-lasting results. Ask Dr. Keyes about nonsurgical wrinkle treatments in your consultation.
Will my results look natural?
Some patients worry that a facelift will make their skin look shiny, overly tight, or like they are in a wind tunnel. Dr. Keyes focuses on giving you results that look subtle and natural, so you appear refreshed, not fake. He will always listen to your concerns and goals before creating your custom treatment plan to produce your best results.
