About Breast Reduction Surgery
Are you preparing yourself to consult with a plastic surgeon for a breast reduction? We understand that decreasing the size of your breast is a big decision to make, which is why we are here for you at Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S. in Los Angeles, CA. While some women are desperate for more volume in the bust line to have a curvaceous appearance, women with excessively large breasts do not enjoy the pull of the weight and disproportion that accompanies abnormally large breasts.
A breast reduction involves the removal of the extraneous breast tissue and skin to recontour the breasts into a smaller, more appropriate size. In most situations, a breast lift can be implemented to provide a more taut and healthier appearance as saggy, heavy breasts have stretched out skin from the weight. Not only does it improve physical health with less pain and pressure put on the joints, but smaller breasts can lift the emotional and social barriers that extra-large breasts create. Dr. Keyes is a double board-certified plastic surgeon in Los Angeles, CA who has helped countless women regain their confidence and enjoy the life they want through a breast reduction. If you would like to talk with Dr. Keyes, who has many years of experience performing breast reduction surgeries, contact us if you are interested in scheduling a consultation in our Los Angeles, CA office. He has numerous satisfied breast reduction patients and will be available to explain more about the procedure during an informative, face-to-face consultation.
Larger-than-average breast volume for breast reduction candidate may be due to either excess glandular breast tissue, fatty tissues, or some combination of the two. Breast reduction is ideal for women who deal with the frustration of having large breasts and are not able to live a fulfilled and active life because of the heaviness of their breasts. The skin under a large, pendulous breast may have chronic skin conditions, neck and shoulder pain, disproportionate breast to body size, and more. A breast reduction surgery can greatly diminish these medical conditions.
If you are considering a breast reduction, it is crucial for you to be at a stable weight, and choose an experienced, skillful surgeon like Dr. Keyes to reshape and create a normal and natural breast appearance.
Breast Reduction Reviews
"Breast Implant Removal - I had my breast implants removed due to problems with capsules forming and related illnesses I developed over the years. I went to Dr. Keyes because he's so careful and his professional credentials are the best in the industry. I wasn't looking for artistry, instead, I wanted the removal of all scar tissue and anything making me sick by the best and most cautious professional. He interviewed me and gave his professional opinion but ultimately let me choose what I wanted to do. It's been about 10 years now since he removed them and I've been so happy and my health has returned. Afterwards, I developed a massive rash and he saw me and prescribed meds to help with my reaction. He was available by cell and yelled at my boyfriend who was supposed to care for me that night but disappeared. (That Boyfriend is gone and out the door, thank you Dr. Keyes for showing how abusive my boyfriend was at that time!) My breasts have found a new normal and I wish I never messed with them in the first place, but Dr. Keyes and his nurse really took care of me. This was a life changing surgery. Thank you Dr."- P. / RealSelf / Sep 25, 2019
"I went in for a consultation for a tummy tuck and a breast augmentation. Dr. Keyes thoroughly informed me of all the risks and regulations/rules to follow leading up to the surgery as well as after. Dr. Keyes and Kimberley were very kind and caring. They make themselves easily available to answer any questions or worries. From the numerous calls checking in after surgery, to the way they treat you during visits, it is obvious they truly care for their patients. My results are improving every day. It has been about a month since my surgery and I am surprised at how the results are changing. I am happy with my results and so glad I went to Dr. Keyes. I will be returning to him for anything else I decide to do."- A. / RealSelf / Jun 19, 2019
"Over the course of 10 years, I have battled major insecurities concerning my saggy breast. I spent a good amount of time researching the right plastic surgeon. After consulting with doctors who were more concerned about what they wanted rather than what I wanted, Dr. Keyes was the only one to place my mind at ease. I wasn’t treated like a number and my breast augmentation procedure was not just about the money. Dr. Keyes did his due diligence to ensure that I was physically and mentally prepared for surgery. He refused to proceed with the procedure until my I’s were dotted and my t’s were crossed health-wise. I felt so fortunate to be under his safe care. Dr. Keyes is a master surgeon and he knows exactly what he’s doing on the operating table. He is also a good prognosticator of the end product as well. If you are considering a breast lift or augmentation, I would encourage you to give Dr. Keyes a try. You will not regret it. I would be remiss if I failed to give credit to Dr. Keyes’ right hand woman, Kimberley. She is the most patient, kindest, and sweetest people I know. From start to finish, Kimberley proved to be a key asset throughout the process. I am so happy with my results and I'm most grateful that I had chosen Dr. Keyes!"- B. / RealSelf / Jun 19, 2019

Dr. Keyes and Kimberly frequently checked in on me via text, call, and facetime. Dr. Keyes truly gave me the most natural-looking results for both my breast and nose. My breast cannot look any more natural. I have cleavage, side boob, and I don't look top-heavy. I no longer need my victoria secret very sexy bombshell push up bra :) I did not experience pain with my rhino, just felt stuffy. Breast pain was tolerable with pain meds for two days, after that it was just a matter of getting used to the implant. I am obsessed with my results. He is the best!"- K. / RealSelf / Aug 15, 2021
"Best in the Business - In November 2019 I had rhinoplasty revision surgery & a facelift with Dr. Keyes and Kimberly. I had consultations with other very experienced & highly regarded surgeons but did not feel the connection that you need to have with the surgeon and staff.Dr. Keyes is very well regarded and President of the Rhinoplasty Society so I trusted him completely and listened to his guidance, he does what is best for his patient and will not try to "sell you" which is very common with a lot of Los Angeles surgeons. He also officially sets the Standard for Safety in Plastic Surgery. You are putting your life and looks in a surgeon's hands it's important to feel safe and confident! Dr. Keyes and Kimberly were patient, caring and went beyond the call of duty at every step of the way. Surgical breast reduction is an outpatient procedure and is conducted under general anesthesia. The time frame for the surgery depends on many factors, including the incision type, the general surgical technique, and the amount of tissue removal needed. The areola and nipple area repositioning are also factors.
Typically, liposuction is incorporated for tissue and fat reduction to reduce the breast size. At the time of the initial consult, all of these aspects are addressed with Dr. Keyes. The potential for scarring is also carefully examined and talked through as it is likely to occur. However, modern techniques have led to a significant decrease in the visibility of scarring. Based on the difficulty of the size and overall reduction, either an inverted-T or a straight line (vertical) incision will be made. Breast fat and tissue will then be removed, and the surrounding skin and tissue will be pulled and lifted. The incisions will be sutured closed and you will be prepared for your post-operation recovery.
What to Expect
Once your surgery has been completed, you will be monitored closely in our quiet recovery room and then sent home to begin the healing process. A thin tube for draining is usually inserted near the incision area to assist with fluid drainage. A compression bra should be worn for a few days to increase your breast's blood circulation during recovery. In a month or so, your breasts will naturally fall into position and the post-surgery effects will dissipate. Most of our former breast reduction patients at Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S. say they feel more weightless, lighter, and more confident. Following surgical breast reduction, you can enjoy clothes that fit properly and feel excited to wear with your new appearance. Keep in mind it is important to maintain a healthy body weight so the outcomes are not compromised.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does breast reduction surgery cost?
Your cost for breast reduction surgery can be reviewed with Dr. Keyes in your consultation. When he has created your treatment plan, it is easier to calculate your costs, which will cover facility fees, anesthesia, and more. Reduction surgery usually leads to a dramatic improvement in all aspects of life, which is why our staff will help you find low-interest financing to make your treatment easy to afford. We will also help you talk to your insurance provider to see if your policy covers some of your expenses.
Will my insurance cover breast reduction?
Your health insurance might pay part of the cost of your surgery if it's considered medically necessary. If you want to use your insurance, talk to Dr. Keyes so he can assist you with the paperwork required with your claim. You should contact your insurance provider to find out if your policy might pay for the surgery and what information they need to make it happen. Your insurance might require a letter of recommendation from Dr. Keyes and body measurements like your weight, height, body surface area, and body mass index (BMI) to determine if it is a medical necessity.
Will my nipples be moved?
Usually, the nipples and areola will be moved up to a higher position during breast reduction surgery. If a significant amount of tissue and skin needs to be removed, your nipple-areola complex (especially if you have a stretched-out areola) may be reshaped and moved. Dr. Keyes will select an incision technique so the nipple and areola are easy to move higher. Your options will be explained in your consultation.
Can I breastfeed after a breast reduction?
Reduction surgery can affect breastfeeding. Although some women can still breastfeed after a surgical reduction, other women cannot. It's difficult to know whether your breast reduction will interfere with breastfeeding. If you are considering breast reduction surgery and want to breastfeed in the future, talk to Dr. Keyes about this concern.
Can my breasts grow back after surgery?
Following a breast reduction surgery, your breasts will smaller or bigger if you have dramatic weight changes. This is why it is better to maintain a stable, healthy weight before and after your reduction surgery. In your consultation, Dr. Keyes will discuss the best ways to prepare for your reduction and what you can do after to help make sure your results last.
