About Breast Reduction Surgery
Are you preparing yourself to consult with a plastic surgeon for a breast reduction? We understand that decreasing the size of your breast is a big decision to make, which is why we are here for you at Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S. in Los Angeles, CA. While some women are desperate for more volume in the bust line to have a curvaceous appearance, women with excessively large breasts do not enjoy the pull of the weight and disproportion that accompanies abnormally large breasts.
A breast reduction involves the removal of the extraneous breast tissue and skin to recontour the breasts into a smaller, more appropriate size. In most situations, a breast lift can be implemented to provide a more taut and healthier appearance as saggy, heavy breasts have stretched out skin from the weight. Not only does it improve physical health with less pain and pressure put on the joints, but smaller breasts can lift the emotional and social barriers that extra-large breasts create. Dr. Keyes is a double board-certified plastic surgeon in Los Angeles, CA who has helped countless women regain their confidence and enjoy the life they want through a breast reduction. If you would like to talk with Dr. Keyes, who has many years of experience performing breast reduction surgeries, contact us if you are interested in scheduling a consultation in our Los Angeles, CA office. He has numerous satisfied breast reduction patients and will be available to explain more about the procedure during an informative, face-to-face consultation.
Breast Reduction Ideal Candidates
Larger-than-average breast volume for breast reduction candidate may be due to either excess glandular breast tissue, fatty tissues, or some combination of the two. Breast reduction is ideal for women who deal with the frustration of having large breasts and are not able to live a fulfilled and active life because of the heaviness of their breasts. The skin under a large, pendulous breast may have chronic skin conditions, neck and shoulder pain, disproportionate breast to body size, and more. A breast reduction surgery can greatly diminish these medical conditions.
If you are considering a breast reduction, it is crucial for you to be at a stable weight, and choose an experienced, skillful surgeon like Dr. Keyes to reshape and create a normal and natural breast appearance.

Breast Reduction Surgical Technique
Surgical breast reduction is an outpatient procedure and is conducted under general anesthesia. The time frame for the surgery depends on many factors, including the incision type, the general surgical technique, and the amount of tissue removal needed. The areola and nipple area repositioning are also factors.
Typically, liposuction is incorporated for tissue and fat reduction to reduce the breast size. At the time of the initial consult, all of these aspects are addressed with Dr. Keyes. The potential for scarring is also carefully examined and talked through as it is likely to occur. However, modern techniques have led to a significant decrease in the visibility of scarring. Based on the difficulty of the size and overall reduction, either an inverted-T or a straight line (vertical) incision will be made. Breast fat and tissue will then be removed, and the surrounding skin and tissue will be pulled and lifted. The incisions will be sutured closed and you will be prepared for your post-operation recovery.
What to Expect with Breast Reduction
Once your surgery has been completed, you will be monitored closely in our quiet recovery room and then sent home to begin the healing process. A thin tube for draining is usually inserted near the incision area to assist with fluid drainage. A compression bra should be worn for a few days to increase your breast's blood circulation during recovery. In a month or so, your breasts will naturally fall into position and the post-surgery effects will dissipate. Most of our former breast reduction patients at Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S. say they feel more weightless, lighter, and more confident. Following surgical breast reduction, you can enjoy clothes that fit properly and feel excited to wear with your new appearance. Keep in mind it is important to maintain a healthy body weight so the outcomes are not compromised.
