About Chemical Peels

For the highest quality results from chemical peel facial treatments, Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S. provides you with several choices. Your professional chemical peel with exfoliating solutions (such as salicylic, glycolic, trichloroacetic and lactic acids) will reveal smoother, healthier skin. At our Los Angeles, CA office, our double board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Geoffrey Keyes, applies chemical peel treatments that minimize skin abnormalities like wrinkles, scars, fine lines, rough patches, hyperpigmentation, and more.

Chemical peels dissolve dead, damaged skin cells with a special peel on the skin that causes the visible layer to slough off. When your skin recovers and starts to repair and rejuvenate itself, you may see a smoother, clearer complexion. A chemical peel facial is a nonsurgical option to make your complexion radiant and may be used for the neck and face. Our rejuvenating chemical peels will encourage the regeneration of new, healthy skin after your treatment and reveal clearer and smoother facial skin.

Depending on the concentration of your chemical peel, Dr. Keyes may not need to apply anesthesia or other numbing agents. Sometimes, a light topical anesthesia with no side effects may be recommended to limit discomfort.

Variations of Chemical Peels

In our Los Angeles, CA office, we perform chemical peels in three levels of strength (light, medium, and deep) to meet your skin needs and goals. Chemical peels can be divided into three levels depending on the concentration of acid used. The different levels determine the duration of the procedure, the amount of acid applied to the skin, and the time it takes to recover from the treatment. If you are not requesting an intensive experience, a light-depth chemical peel will very beneficial.

Light peels: You can receive a light peel during your lunch time and return back to your routine. This level of peel will remove the outer skin layer (the epidermis), giving your face a more radiant appearance and smoother texture. We usually recommend that you receive a light chemical peel about once a month for the ideal glowing results.

Medium-depth peels: This level of peel reaches further into the skin, and patients generally decide to have this strength of facial treatment during an extended weekend. You may also need to ready yourself for increased discomfort during and up to one hour following the peel. Medium-depth peels are designed for patients who have deeper damage to their skin including deeper lines and darker pigmentation problems.

Deep peels: The strongest of the three levels of peels is the deep chemical peel, and it does require the lengthiest recovery time. This is an aggressive procedure that can leave your face itchy, swollen, and peeling for 2 – 3 weeks. Patients who get a deep chemical peel may have age or dark spots, sun damage, prominent acne scars, and deep scars. Since this level of treatment is usually uncomfortable for patients, your aesthetician can provide you with local anesthesia before your peel.

Ideal Candidates

Getting the recommendations of a trusted medical professional is the first part of the journey to healthy, smooth skin. At Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S., we will evaluate your skin during an exam in our Los Angeles, CA office before selecting a chemical peel for best results. Women and men who have visible concerns on their skin including scars, flaky skin, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots, and more are great candidates. We will recommend varying strengths of peels to match your needs and goals. Dr. Keyes will recommend that you stop smoking a few weeks before and after the treatment. If you are currently using any type of acne medication, you will need to stop using it to be considered a good candidate. You will also need to be in good health and cleared of any skin infections.

Procedure Technique

In a pre-treatment consultation session, Dr. Keyes will ask you to provide your medical history and also ask you to appear for a few pre-treatment sessions where mild moisturizing creams may be used to make your skin more suited for the treatment.

During your appointment at Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S., we will have you lying in a comfortable position to administer your treatment. A team member will ensure the skin is cleaned prior to applying the personalized solution to the face, neck, and decolletage. We will spread the solution onto the skin and allow it to work for an appropriate length of time that will be determined in your chemical peel consultation. Next, we will clean the peel off your skin and put on a neutralizing agent. Patients should bring sunscreen and/or a hat to wear outside following the peel to protect against UV exposure.

What to Expect

You may experience a slight tingling sensation during the process but it is mild and will subside quickly. Your skin’s rejuvenated appearance will reveal itself in 2 – 3 days. You will notice improved, texture, pigmentation, and a better skin tone. If you are having a light peel, you can return to work almost immediately after the procedure, and there are also no restrictions on using cosmetics.

Based on the strength of the chemical peel you receive, you should expect the treated area to peel and itch from several days to two or more weeks. Dr. Keyes or a member of his team will discuss ways to treat your face after your procedure by recommending a moisturizer, a mild cleanser, and anything else that may help facilitate a speedy recovery. Please remember that no matter how badly your skin itches throughout the recovery, it's not good to peel the skin off. You may create scarring to your skin.

What level should I choose for my chemical peel?
Which level of chemical peel is best for you will vary based on your specific skin issues and aesthetic goals. In your initial consultation with Dr. Keyes, he can help you choose which chemical peel is best for your skin. A few things you might consider are your general health, the type of skin you have, the depth of your skin concerns, the time you can commit to recovery, and what you want the peel to accomplish. Initially, it's better to select a light chemical peel and see what you think of the results. After this, you and Dr. Keyes may alter your plan for advanced results.

Should I get a chemical peel or dermabrasion treatment?
Chemical peels and dermabrasion are both facial treatments that address surface blemishes to make your skin a smoother appearance. The main difference is that dermabrasion requires special tools (a shaving instrument or rotating brush) to clear away the surface skin layer with a careful exfoliating process. A chemical peel applies a caustic solution to your skin to dissolve damaged skin cells. In your initial consultation, Dr. Keyes will explain the pros and cons of both options and help you choose if dermabrasion or a chemical peel best fits your skin goals.

Will my face hurt after a chemical peel?
Based on the chemicals selected, you might feel mild discomfort when it is on your skin. If you choose a light peel, you may notice a little discomfort; however, this can be alleviated with a small fan. Deep or medium peels are better for deeper issues and give you longer-lasting results; however, they usually cause greater discomfort. Numbing cream, medications, and ointments may be used to help you feel more comfortable during your chemical peel. Dr. Keyes or a member of his team will go over post-treatment skin care to help your skin heal.
