About Revision Rhinoplasty
When you thought your initial rhinoplasty would give you the dramatic enhancement you wanted, but in reality, you are unhappy with the shape of your new nose or struggling to breathe through your nose. Nasal augmentation should have significantly improved the overall appearance of your face. By augmenting specific elements of your nose and more, your primary rhinoplasty should have been sufficient in creating the look you wanted. If your first rhinoplasty did not meet your expectations, we invite you to have a consultation with our double board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Geoffrey Keyes.
Corrective facial plastic surgery procedures, including rhinoplasty, with our Los Angeles, CA practice, may be performed to rectify obstructed breathing and reshape your nose for a more harmonious appearance. In addition to fine-tuning your appearance, Dr. Keyes knows that the ability to breathe with less congested is of the utmost importance. Although corrective surgery is complex, there are three basic procedures that are involved in the reconstruction of the nose. Those procedures help to improve the nasal tip, bony framework, and repair a twisted or deviated septum. Arrange an appointment with Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S. in Los Angeles, CA to discover more about revision rhinoplasty and your opportunities for achieving better results.
"I chose Dr. Keyes after looking for the best plastic surgeon in California for my daughter’s rhinoplasty. From the very first appointment, I felt she was in the right hands. He showed us exactly what he was going to do and what we could expect and sure enough, that’s what he delivered. She had very little pain and her nose looks amazing. I’m so glad we selected Dr. Keyes and Kimberley to care for my daughter. I highly recommend Dr. Keyes and staff!"- M.G. / Google / Jun 14, 2019
"Finding Dr. Keyes was fate. After having one of the worst rhinoplasty consultations from a top plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills (that quoted me an obscene amount),I was kind of unmotivated and scared to keep looking. Out of nowhere, Dr. Keyes showed up at my workplace. I remember thinking how kind and welcoming he was in our interaction. When I found out he was a plastic surgeon specializing in rhinoplasty I knew this was meant to be! He answered all my questions right then and there and told me to call his surgical assistant and manager, Kimberley, and let me tell you...Kimberley is AMAZING!!! Not only did Kimberley answer the phone immediately with the most comforting voice but she scheduled a consultation based on what worked best for my schedule. The consultation was so easy. I didn't even have to wait. They brought me in the room, took photos of my nose and next thing I know Dr. Keyes was in the room showing me what my nose could look like. He listened to what I had to say, what I was self conscious about, and really incorporated me into the treatment and what I could get out of it. Dr. Keyes and Kimberley made me feel welcome, comfortable, excited, and confident about my decision on getting my nose done. Scheduling my surgery was crazy because of my schedule at school and work. Kimberley always answered my calls and answered my concerns about rescheduling my surgery which made it very convenient for me. Surgery day was nerve wracking but exciting. The anesthesiology nurse even called me a few days before to make sure I was aware of the process and what would happen, addressed my concerns about surgery, and eased my nerves. Dr. Keyes, Kimberley, and all the nurses made sure I was okay, talked me through the process, and kept me updated on what was happening next. Next thing I know, I was waking up with Dr. Keyes and Kimberley by my side. They called that night to make sure I was okay and scheduled a time for me to come in the next day. From the time I woke up from surgery, I had barely any pain! Besides the swelling and bruising(which is expected), recover was so easy. I was up and about within a few days. The bruising and swelling went down within 5 to 7 days but that's patient specific. When I finally got my cast off, I couldn't believe how amazing my nose looked! I couldn't help but cry my eyes out. It was just what I wanted for sooo long. To this day, I still look at myself in the mirror and get all giddy inside. The best part is how NATURAL it turned out. I still look like ME and I LOVE it. People that knew me before the surgery just look at me and tell me something as changed but they can't pinpoint it. If you are looking for a natural looking nose that compliments your face and who you are as a person then Dr. Keyes is your guy!I have never felt so confident and beautiful in my life. I owe it all to Dr. Keyes and Kimberley!!!"- L.F. / Google / Jun 14, 2019
"Dr. Keyes and Kimberley are amazing! They treated me with respect and provided incredible care before and after surgery. I am 3 weeks post op from rhinoplasty surgery. The swelling has gone down tremendously and will continue to do so. I am thrilled with how it looks so far and I know it’ll only get better!"- A.W. / Google / May 22, 2019
"I have been a patient of Dr Keyes for over 17 years now and I highly recommend Dr Keyes. Over that period of time I have had breast augmentation, brow and lid lifts, nose job, lipo and botox treatments. I have been completely satisfied with the results and have always received professional and caring service from Dr Keyes, Kimberly, and staff. I recommended Dr Keyes to a college friend of mine years ago and she is also very happy with her breast augmentation from Dr Keyes. Unlike some cosmetic surgery offices, Dr Keyes will not comment on a body part unless YOU ask first. Check out his impressive credentials and go visit him for a consultation !"- I.G. / Google / May 22, 2019
"After interviewing three other Doctors for my girlfriends augmentation, we decided to go with Dr.Keyes. From his office, to his staff, Kimberley is amazing, we felt comfortable from the get go. We always felt he cared about us as people and the surgery was a marvelous success, he is a talented sculpture and he had had us following up with visits for months now just to make sure the healing is going along as it should. I would recommend him in a heartbeat!"- D.S. / Yelp / Feb 26, 2019
Revision nose surgery requires methodical planning, analytics, and superior surgical skills, which are all qualities Dr. Keyes possesses. For several decades, Dr. Keyes has been correcting the effects of previous nose surgeries, which were performed by other doctors. With a primary focus on rhinoplasty, Dr. Keyes has been able to restore thousands of patients’ ability to breathe and re-establish balance, symmetry, and beauty of the nose for a renewed sense of confidence and elevated self-esteem.
Prior to initiating revision rhinoplasty, Dr. Keyes will learn more about your situation to understand your individual desires and aesthetic goals before designing a course of action. During the actual procedure, Dr. Keyes will choose either a closed or open nose surgical approach. While employing the open technique (the most common approach), Dr. Keyes will detach the skin from the cartilage and bone, allowing for increased visibility. Next, Dr. Keyes will shape your nose as decided upon during the consultation. The closed technique is much less invasive and typically chosen for simpler repairs. Sometimes during revision rhinoplasty, a cartilage or bone graft is required to help strengthen and reconstruct the framework of your nose. Just like the first surgery, our post-op surgical team will bandage the area and send you to recovery until it is appropriate for your discharge.
What to Expect
Rhinoplasty revision is typically completed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. The amount of time your surgery will take depends upon the type of repair and the technique employed. After the surgery, you will be asked to wear a nose splint for about a week and could be asked to arrange a follow-up appointment to remove the splint and stitches. This will also allow Dr. Keyes to check up on your recovery. Since revision rhinoplasty can typically be more difficult than the initial surgery, you can expect the recovery to be more lengthy. You could also experience heavier swelling, deeper bruising, and more discomfort than your initial rhinoplasty.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a revision rhinoplasty cost?
Your cost for revision rhinoplasty will vary depending on how much reconstruction is required. In your consultation, Dr. Keyes will understand your concerns before examining the results of your original rhinoplasty. When a surgical plan is developed, he can more accurately estimate your costs. Dr. Keyes will also go over the forms of payment we accept at our practice.
How long should I wait after my original rhinoplasty?
It is crucial to allow your nose time to heal following nose surgery. In most patients, it may take more than one year for swelling to subside so you can see the final shape of your nose. When your nose is fully healed from rhinoplasty, you need to take some time to decide how you much you like or dislike the appearance and then schedule an appointment at Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S.
How common are revision rhinoplasty procedures?
Nose surgery is a popular cosmetic surgery and many people are pleased with their outcomes. In a few patients, revision rhinoplasty is necessary to correct large cosmetic flaws or functional issues caused by the first surgery. If you're unhappy at all with your nose surgery by Dr. Keyes or another plastic surgeon, visit us for a consultation to get more information on revision rhinoplasty.
How can I ensure that I will receive better results with a revision procedure?
It's very important to do research when selecting a plastic surgeon to do a revision rhinoplasty. Dr. Keyes is a skilled plastic surgeon with more than 40 years of experience in nose surgery with a unique interest in secondary surgery. He understands the complexities of the nasal structure and advanced techniques needed to complete a second rhinoplasty (and avoid collapsing your nasal structure).
Will I need cartilage grafting?
In some cases, cartilage grafting might be needed. Dr. Keyes will remove cartilage and/or bone from another part of your body, like the ribs, and transfer it to rebuild the structure of your nose. Usually, this is only required in serious cases or when the cartilage was damaged in the original rhinoplasty. Cartilage grafting will strengthen your nasal structure so you do not have trouble breathing after your revision rhinoplasty. Dr. Keyes will discuss if cartilage grafting may be needed in your initial consultation.
