About Facelift Surgery

In Los Angeles, CA, one of the most common surgeries at Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a facelift. Did you know that the most common age men and women seek a facelift is at age 45? No matter what age you are, if you have loose skin on your face that makes you feel older than you are or you have specific areas you would like to tweak, Dr. Keyes is an excellent choice.

During surgery, he can carefully conceal incisions in your hairline and behind your ears. He can lift the muscles, attaching them in higher positions. He will also carefully close the incisions to result in minimized scarring. His initial training in surgery of the head and neck has provided a wonderful reconstructive surgery background to enhance his understanding of the facelift procedure. Dr. Keyes has worked on honing his facelift skills for 40 years. This treatment focuses on precise areas of the face to correct loose skin and wrinkles to create a smooth, more youthful appearance in areas around the eyes, the mid-face area and cheeks, the bottom section including the mouth, jowls, neck, and more. Dr. Keyes is an experienced facial surgeon who understands the anatomy and complex intricacies of your skin. Types of Facelifts

Regardless of your aesthetic concerns, there are numerous facelifts to consider. Some facelifts treat the upper area of the face, and others focus on the lower two-thirds. Moreover, some techniques are a bit more invasive than others. Some of the more known facelift techniques include:

  • Full Facelift
A common surgery for older adults, the full or "traditional" facelift. This facelift incorporates an incision near the hairline, extending down to the temple region, and stopping near the base of the ears. The deeper layer of facial muscles will be delicately stretched and securely tightened to create a lifted appearance, which diminishes excessive wrinkles and sagging. A full facelift is for patients who show signs of aggressive aging and may need a combination of treatments for optimal outcomes, such as an eyelid lift to address the eyes or neck reduction for the lower region.
  • Mid-Facelift
Incorporating a similar method to the mini facelift, the cheek lift (known as a mid-facelift) addresses the droopy features around the cheekbones as well as the upper jaw. The mid facelift works great for men and women who desire improvement in the middle to lower region of the face, which also includes the jowls.
  • Lower Facelift
A lower facelift elevates the skin on the neck, chin, and jowls. Methods of a nonsurgical nature, such as Kybella chin fat reduction injections or laser skin tightening, may be applied before surgical intervention for a younger-looking neck.
  • Mini Facelift
When undergoing a mini facelift, tiny incisions will be placed near the ears to elevate the skin, which helps the mouth and jawline. This technique creates nice and subtle enhancements, which look beautiful and natural.

Ideal Candidates

If you are experiencing age lines and wrinkles, jowls, or skin laxity within the skin of your lower to mid-face, you may be a good candidate for a facelift. Dr. Keyes will perform a facial exam and consultation to determine your candidacy for this procedure and begin to plan your surgery. Facelift techniques are different for patients who are in their thirties who have loose skin versus patients who are over sixty with aged, elastin-depleted skin. Skin laxity is one of the key components in the decision-making process. No matter what your age, you should be physically healthy, be a nonsmoker, and also have expectations that are realistic of what a facelift can do for the skin.

Surgical Technique

Prior to the facelift procedure, you will receive a list of instructions to follow in order to enhance your recovery. This may include: having someone to stay with you during the initial 24 hours or more after the procedure and buying gauze pads, ice chips, and prescription medications beforehand. The facelift procedure may be performed under twilight sedation or general anesthesia, depending upon Dr. Keyes and your preference. Some patients may opt for a general or a local anesthetic; however, most of our facelift patients will use twilight sedation. The incisions will be made strategically behind the hairline and may extend around your head, depending upon the extent of the lift required. During the procedure, Dr. Keyes will lift excess tissue, muscle, and/or skin. He will reposition and suture it back into an elevated place. During surgery, he can carefully conceal incisions in your hairline and behind your ears.

The incision may be made in front of the ear, inside the ear, and then extends behind the ear by the earlobe. The skin, fat, and muscle are separated, lifted and then re-draped to a more youthful-appearing position. Often times, the fat and muscle are sutured in place to prevent premature descent. Extra care will be taken in suturing the incision to minimize the scar after the initial healing period. After surgery, you will rest comfortably and may be transferred to an aftercare facility for recovery care before returning home. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a facelift cost?
The cost of your facelift will depend on the technique and other factors. In your consultation, Dr. Keyes will create your unique treatment plan to match your needs and goals. When the consultation complete, he can go over estimates of fees. To avoid unnatural-looking results, it's better to concentrate on finding a skilled surgeon, like Dr. Keyes, instead of the lowest price. Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S. can give you information on low-interest financing as well.

Should I get a surgical or nonsurgical facelift? Which technique is best for me?
The best technique for you will vary based on your concerns, goals, level of skin laxity, what areas are being addressed, and other factors. To produce your best results, Dr. Keyes will explain the different techniques in your consultation. He can then help you choose the technique.

Although there are several great noninvasive skin tightening treatments, these can only give you small improvements. For moderate-to-severe skin sagging, facelift surgery is the optimal choice to improve your appearance. In your consultation, Dr. Keyes will discuss your options, including any nonsurgical procedures to help you meet your goals.

What about wrinkle fillers and relaxers over facelift surgery?
Wrinkle fillers (Juvéderm®) and relaxers (BOTOX®) have become a popular noninvasive way to improve fine lines and wrinkles. Also known as a liquid facelift, nonsurgical wrinkle treatments with injectables usually help with early signs of aging. Unfortunately, the results will only last more than 1 – 2 years. A facelift will produce more significant improvements than injectables with longer-lasting results. Ask Dr. Keyes about nonsurgical wrinkle treatments in your consultation.

Will my results look natural?
Some patients worry that a facelift will make their skin look shiny, overly tight, or like they are in a wind tunnel. Dr. Keyes focuses on giving you results that look subtle and natural, so you appear refreshed, not fake. He will always listen to your concerns and goals before creating your custom treatment plan to produce your best results.
