About Arm Lift Surgery
One big challenge when getting older or losing weight is the appearance of excess skin. At Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S., we offer upper arm lift surgery (also known as brachioplasty ) as a procedure for anyone who cannot manage to tone and tighten the arm with exercise and diet. Loose skin from the elbow to the shoulder is very typical, particularly for women and men who are advancing in age or have lost weight. Arm lift surgery excises drooping upper arm skin, sometimes disparagingly called "bat wings." Dr. Geoffrey Keyes, a double board-certified plastic surgeon, is very skilled in fat removal and skin tightening surgical techniques. If you want to hear more information about how an arm lift can alter the contour of your upper arms, please schedule an appointment at Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S. in Los Angeles, CA.
"I chose Dr. Keyes after looking for the best plastic surgeon in California for my daughter’s rhinoplasty. From the very first appointment, I felt she was in the right hands. He showed us exactly what he was going to do and what we could expect and sure enough, that’s what he delivered. She had very little pain and her nose looks amazing. I’m so glad we selected Dr. Keyes and Kimberley to care for my daughter. I highly recommend Dr. Keyes and staff!"- M.G. / Google / Jun 14, 2019
"Finding Dr. Keyes was fate. After having one of the worst rhinoplasty consultations from a top plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills (that quoted me an obscene amount),I was kind of unmotivated and scared to keep looking. Out of nowhere, Dr. Keyes showed up at my workplace. I remember thinking how kind and welcoming he was in our interaction. When I found out he was a plastic surgeon specializing in rhinoplasty I knew this was meant to be! He answered all my questions right then and there and told me to call his surgical assistant and manager, Kimberley, and let me tell you...Kimberley is AMAZING!!! Not only did Kimberley answer the phone immediately with the most comforting voice but she scheduled a consultation based on what worked best for my schedule. The consultation was so easy. I didn't even have to wait. They brought me in the room, took photos of my nose and next thing I know Dr. Keyes was in the room showing me what my nose could look like. He listened to what I had to say, what I was self conscious about, and really incorporated me into the treatment and what I could get out of it. Dr. Keyes and Kimberley made me feel welcome, comfortable, excited, and confident about my decision on getting my nose done. Scheduling my surgery was crazy because of my schedule at school and work. Kimberley always answered my calls and answered my concerns about rescheduling my surgery which made it very convenient for me. Surgery day was nerve wracking but exciting. The anesthesiology nurse even called me a few days before to make sure I was aware of the process and what would happen, addressed my concerns about surgery, and eased my nerves. Dr. Keyes, Kimberley, and all the nurses made sure I was okay, talked me through the process, and kept me updated on what was happening next. Next thing I know, I was waking up with Dr. Keyes and Kimberley by my side. They called that night to make sure I was okay and scheduled a time for me to come in the next day. From the time I woke up from surgery, I had barely any pain! Besides the swelling and bruising(which is expected), recover was so easy. I was up and about within a few days. The bruising and swelling went down within 5 to 7 days but that's patient specific. When I finally got my cast off, I couldn't believe how amazing my nose looked! I couldn't help but cry my eyes out. It was just what I wanted for sooo long. To this day, I still look at myself in the mirror and get all giddy inside. The best part is how NATURAL it turned out. I still look like ME and I LOVE it. People that knew me before the surgery just look at me and tell me something as changed but they can't pinpoint it. If you are looking for a natural looking nose that compliments your face and who you are as a person then Dr. Keyes is your guy!I have never felt so confident and beautiful in my life. I owe it all to Dr. Keyes and Kimberley!!!"- L.F. / Google / Jun 14, 2019
"Dr. Keyes and Kimberley are amazing! They treated me with respect and provided incredible care before and after surgery. I am 3 weeks post op from rhinoplasty surgery. The swelling has gone down tremendously and will continue to do so. I am thrilled with how it looks so far and I know it’ll only get better!"- A.W. / Google / May 22, 2019
"I have been a patient of Dr Keyes for over 17 years now and I highly recommend Dr Keyes. Over that period of time I have had breast augmentation, brow and lid lifts, nose job, lipo and botox treatments. I have been completely satisfied with the results and have always received professional and caring service from Dr Keyes, Kimberly, and staff. I recommended Dr Keyes to a college friend of mine years ago and she is also very happy with her breast augmentation from Dr Keyes. Unlike some cosmetic surgery offices, Dr Keyes will not comment on a body part unless YOU ask first. Check out his impressive credentials and go visit him for a consultation !"- I.G. / Google / May 22, 2019
"After interviewing three other Doctors for my girlfriends augmentation, we decided to go with Dr.Keyes. From his office, to his staff, Kimberley is amazing, we felt comfortable from the get go. We always felt he cared about us as people and the surgery was a marvelous success, he is a talented sculpture and he had had us following up with visits for months now just to make sure the healing is going along as it should. I would recommend him in a heartbeat!"- D.S. / Yelp / Feb 26, 2019
An upper arm lift is an aesthetic surgery employing skin tightening techniques to contour and remove extra skin. If you avoid sleeveless clothes because of your "bat wings" and would prefer them to appear trim and taut again, you are an ideal candidate for arm lift surgery. Not being able to show your arm skin can cause severe self-consciousness and embarrassment. To be a candidate for arm lift surgery, you need to be in overall good health so that your skin will recover properly. It is important that you are at or near your goal weight before your procedure.
Your upper arm lift surgery will be performed in an outpatient facility, except in cases where multiple cosmetic surgeries are scheduled to be performed at one time. An upper arm lift may be added to other surgeries (often completed at a facility with inpatient monitoring), like a mommy makeover, tummy tuck, or thigh lift — as long as Dr. Keyes considers it appropriate. Arm lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia and requires a few hours to finish. The sagging skin will be surgically excised starting at the elbow and move up to the armpit. Dr. Keyes will trim away loose, drooping upper-arm skin and remove stubborn fatty tissue. The incision will be placed to be as concealed as possible, although it will leave a visible scar. Liposuction can also be added to this procedure to remove fatty deposits. After the skin is pulled taut, it will be stitched in place. You will have to care for the incisions by keeping them clean, covered, and in compression garments.
What to Expect
A recovery time frame for the arm lift will take around two weeks with lots of rest. Permit your body time to heal. You use your arms for almost everything, so we encourage you to ease your way back into your usual activities. An appointment to remove sutures will be made around ten days following surgery. Compression garments must be kept on until you receive permission from Dr. Keyes. For at least 4 – 5 weeks, all strenuous activity must be eliminated, except short walks. If you have uncontrolled bleeding, excessive swelling, fluid buildup (hematoma), signs of infection, numbness in the hands or arms, or unusual scarring, please contact Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S. for assistance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does arm lift surgery cost?
The cost for a surgical arm lift will be based on several things. Before he can estimate your costs, Dr. Keyes will start with a consultation assess your appropriateness for an arm lift. Once this is complete, he will develop your treatment plan and break down your costs. In order to make it easier to select an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Keyes and get the results you want, Geoffrey R. Keyes, M.D., F.A.C.S. takes several payments.
Can I combine an arm lift with other surgeries?
It's normal for patients who want an arm lift to create a custom treatment plan with another surgery. This is often called an upper body lift and can combine liposuction, a breast lift, or tummy tuck. An arm lift can be included in an after weight loss surgery for lax skin from a significant weight loss. In your initial consultation with Dr. Keyes, other surgeries can be talked about so your custom treatment plan fits all your goals.
Will there be scars?
An arm lift requires incisions in order to excise loose skin, which leads to scarring from stitches. However, Dr. Keyes will make every effort to use small, thin incisions that are placed in less visible areas. Following your arm lift, creams that help with scar healing will be suggested along with our tips for minimizing scarring. Dr. Keyes also suggests you limit UV exposure for at least one year to minimize scar discoloration. In general, patients consider the overall benefits of an arm lift are worth the minimal scars created.
Are there nonsurgical treatments to improve my arms?
When you are released to exercise, you should try lifting weights (strength training). This is an excellent way to improve the shape of your upper arms by toning the muscles. Nonsurgical treatments like noninvasive skin tightening procedures will only give you minimal improvements in skin laxity.
Although there are several noninvasive skin tightening procedures, they can only give you small improvements. To address moderate-to-severe skin laxity, a surgical arm lift is your best choice. In addition to eliminating loose skin, Dr. Keyes also uses liposuction on small pockets of fat for better results. If you're interested in learning about nonsurgical treatments, Dr. Keyes can talk about these in your consultation.
